Discussion Notes - Nov 23, 2006

Here are my notes from our Thanksgiving Day conversations. If all seems to be in order I will break it up appropriately. Most of this information came from Uncle Michael (Fr. Michael Hansen).

Ulrik (Einar's brother) painted Kropfoss Bridge in Moss - Uncle Mike has the painting
Moss is where Pop Pop (John Hansen) was born & Kropfoss is a waterfall (foss). The painting shows the setting where our Norway cousins (Ellen & Elisabeth) used to swim when young.

Anton (Einar's father) painted the house/homestead compound in Moss... the estate/compound was known as Ulriksborg.

Uncle Mike has a photo of the building that Anton built that was the building where Pop Pop was born.

Anton's father was named Ulrik (many Ulrik's in the family) and emigrated from Kritiansund circa 1850 to Moss. Bought land outside of Moss and added several houses which became known as Ulriksborg (property name). Today it would be considered a part of Moss.

Elsa (Alfred's daughter) was the one who was in love with Nazi soldier. During the occupation she dated a Nazii soldier who was assigned to Drabach. They were on a date and upon returning to Elsa's (Alfred's house) he was shot and killed. She never married and was never the same after that.

--------

Grandma Ellen born at Hvalsmarken (means Hvals farm or field) which was in town/section of Hvalsmoen (moen means rapids) which was part of Honefoss which is the city or county. Hvalsmarken may not exist - was there in 1957 when Uncle Mike visted Norway.

All Grandma Ellen's brothers died bachelors - no children that Unc. Mike knows of. Nora had a baby out of wedlock.

PAINTINGS:
Bayville Beach (Sailboat with Rock Jetty) Located Northwest of Oyster Bay - Uncle Mike used to swim on the jetty shown in the paintingConnecticut is the land in the distant background

Owls Head Park Brooklyn (Red & Black Ship) - The waterway is the Brooklyn Narrows (entrance to NY harbor) circa 1946 (pre Verrazano bridge) the 2 structures on left are terminal structures for the Staten Island Ferry. The road shown is the Belt Parkway that goes to Kennedy Airport (Idlewild Airport at that time). According to Uncle Mike our family would picnic on the green lawn area depicted.

Owls Head Park Brooklyn East - same view but slightly east (in Barbara's livingroom)

Uncle Mike has 2 of Einar's watercolors from Maine - a lot of rock studies

Wedding Paintings - Gram wanted snow scene while Pop Pop wanted water scene. Snow scene (per Uncle Mike) was painted entirely from memory. Uncle Mike believes scene was inspired by American painter, Thwachtorman.

Einar's art studio was at 880 59th Street in Brooklyn, his apartment. he painted for pleasure and would give paintings away to anyone who liked them. He was known to paint paintings as wedding gifts.

When Gunnor married Bud, he painted them a scene with Plow Horses in a Field. Uncle Mike vaguely remembers it. Aunt Elinor has described it by saying you could see the vapor rising off the sweaty horses while the farmer took a break from plowing.

When Kathy and Frank married he painted a scene with a row boat pulled up on shore in a birch grove (J&J painting that is upstairs at Mom's???)

Uncle Mike had 4 paintings and 2 watercolors - 2 oils by Einar, 2 oils by Anton & Ulrich

Oil by Anton circa 1889 was of Ulriksborg (family compound in Moss, Norway) approx 12" x 8".

Other oil by Anton Uncle Mike has now and it is his #2 prize possession (after his blue chalice made in Norway by Einar's brother). Oil is from early 1900's - given to Uncle Mike by Grandma Ellen for his 13th birthday while living in Lodi. It is a picture of Vikings. More specifically, a toddler being proclaimed Viking King (Uncle Mike's interpretation) - toddler being pushed out onto elaborate Viking rug on porch by 2 nursemaids. On lawn group of Viking warriors with shields and swords. Einar not usually good painting people but did these very well. Per Uncle Mike it's about Chieftan King who died in battle but toddler was son of the King - Fjord in backround shows a Viking ship.

Other painting by Einar (approx 8x12) was of cows - Uncle Mike had Michael Garmon of Montclair, NJ restore this as well. His comments were that this was finest amateur work he has seen and that he would even believe Einar studied under a Great French Impressionist by the looks of it. When Uncle Mike mentioned this opinion to Pop Pop, who then said that Grandpa Einar did study in Paris in 1914 but was only there for 1 year and had to come home when WWI started.

While Uncle Mike on sabbatical in year ____ he went to museums across US. In Savannah at Fine Art Museum (Fine being a family name) he saw an exhibit of impressionistic art, specifically 2 paitings by Armond Guilloman. These paintings looked just like Einar's style and it just happens that Guillomand was a teacher in Paris in 1914.

Uncle Mike has Grandma Ellen's boxes of Grandpa's Einar's sketchbooks and art supplies. One of the sketchbooks has a picture of an ice cream truck drawn by Uncle Mike when he was a little boy - his first real drawing he believes while at Einar's apt/art studio.

Einar was a member of an Art Club in Brooklyn, formal name unknown... perhaps was Bay Ridge Art Club?? Uncle Mike has a photo from one of the club's xmas parties, but no names are on the photo.
